For the better part of the last 5 years, Randy Reynolds has been releasing relatively unnoticed records under the moniker Leatherbag. But as of late, with the flurry of acclaim in both the local and national press following the 2009 release of 2 EPs, Tomorrow and Everything I Once Knew, it seems that, as expected, things have begun to change.
Reynolds latest output, a full length album entitled Hey Day, smartly follows the sonic path blazed in 2009. Recorded with the help of Kory Cook [Drums],Drew Emmons [Bass], and Geoff Dupree [Guitar], Hey Day twists and turns through 10 songs restlessly, shifting with the growing tree of rock-and-roll. Though Reynolds influences are often obvious, while not clumsily rendered. Instead, Reynolds and company are found swinging riotously from the aging branches, pausing only to carve their unpretentious, no-frills take on 70’s pop-rock into its trunk — dutifully leaving traces all their own. As usual, the wit behind Reynolds songwriting is impressive enough, but when paired as it is here with just the appropriate amount of musical homage to the ghosts of great rockers past, his songs then shine as a brilliant and sincere musical statement from one of Austin’s most talented songwriters.
Hey Day was recorded by Matt Smith and Michael Crow [Grand Champeen] at Hot Tracks Studios. A release date for the record has yet to be set, but will be announced soon on their website[Find it here.] Leatherbag will be touring regionally in 2010. They hope to take up a week residency in either Chicago or Portland,Ore as well. You can catch them on March 31st at Beerland, where they’ll be joined by Excited States, Frank Smith, and Matt Oliver. I do hope you’ve enjoyed these tracks. I know I have.
[New Music Monday] is our weekly profile of a band with a recent release. So much undiscovered music exists in Texas, and with so many great bands, it can be difficult to hear everything. This post is an attempt to help. E-mail us, if you are in a band and interested in inclusion in this post.
